...children can fly on military flights that have available seating as long as they pay at cost for the fuel needed to fly them on that flight and for any in-flight meals.  Seating is assigned on a first-come-first-get, and on a no-reservations-allowed basis.  [Military flights are very noisy, are barely comfortable, and are not pleasing to the eye (nor usually the nose), but since the veteran has likely flown on at least one during his or her time in the military, he or she is aware of its shortcomings before doing so and can appreciate the savings on transportation costs it will provide him or her.]
